Being a firefighter is an insanely difficult and risky job. Luckily for them, though, it’s not all life and death situations. Just take this video of a firefighter demonstrating how fire escapes through doors during a house fire using a diorama and a squirt bottle.

For a crowd of onlookers, firefighter and instructor J. Kitt attempts to open the front door of a model house that’s currently on fire in order to show them how quickly fire can escape through any opening, as well as demonstrate how much water might be needed to counteract the worst of the fire. After the fire burst through the first time, he went in the second time spraying with water as he opened the door, but the fire still flashed (or flared up) on them, suggesting he wasn’t using enough water.
As he explains, you need to be using a continuous stream of water to put out the flames and ensure the fire doesn’t flash so firefighters can continue to fight the fire raging inside the home. Kitt uses the spray bottle for the remainder of the video, but the fire only gets worse, which suggests to me that a spray bottle might not be the most effective tool against house fires. Thank god firefighters have high-pressure hoses, I guess.
Fortunately for us plebs, our main priority when there’s a fire is to get as far away from the flames as possible, but being mindful of the fact that opening doors can feed fresh oxygen to a fire, causing it to flare up and continue its rampage.
Or perhaps your main takeaway from the video was the same as the commenter who wrote, “The only thing I learned from this video is, I need to get a bigger spray bottle.”
Touché.
