After nearly two years in hospice care, former President Jimmy Carter rang in his 100th birthday on Tuesday. The first former United States president to reach centenarian status, Carter's legacy spans well beyond his age, not only from embracing his working-class roots throughout his presidency but also by inspiring generations of Americans with his continued humanitarian work later in life.
