20 Shocking Photos of the Taiwan Earthquake Aftermath
At least nine people are dead, dozens trapped, and over 900 injured after a 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck just south of Taiwan at 7:58 am local time. The earthquake was the strongest Taiwan has experienced in 25 years, and the shaking triggered landslides and damaged hundreds of buildings. Photos of the disaster have already made their way online, and here are 20 of the most shocking.
Despite the significant damage to the city, Taiwan must brace for more. According to the United States Geological Survey, there have already been 29 aftershocks since the initial event, with "Tremors as high as magnitude 7" expected in the coming days. Taiwan sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire and has experienced seven earthquakes of magnitude seven or higher in the last 50 years.
National Security Council spokesperson Adrienne Watson stated that the Biden administration is "monitoring reports of the earthquake impacting Taiwan," and that "The United States stands ready to provide any necessary assistance." The Municipal Government claims that hospitals are operating normally despite the disaster, but 91,000 residencies are currently without power, and more remote suburbs have yet to be completely surveyed.
Hopefully, Taiwan can quickly recover from this natural disaster and any subsequent tremors.
