20 Impressive Buildings and Bridges For Engineering Nerds

Who doesn't like tall buildings, long bridges, and generally massive bits of infrastructure? Nobody, that's who. It's part of human nature to be in awe of everything ginormous, especially when we're the ones who created the things themselves. If you want to see some of these colossal creations, check out this list of 20 awesome feats of industrial engineering for all of you architectural nerds.

The actual longest bridge over a body of water isn't where you might think, and spans Lake Pontchartrain in Louisiana just north of New Orleans. Opened in 1956 and known as the "Causeway," the two parallel bridges span almost 24 miles. According to the Federal Highway Administration, eight full miles of the journey are spent with land out of sight in either direction. It might not be spectacular looking, but boy is that one long bridge.

On the opposite end of the spectrum is China's Beipanjiang Bridge, spanning the Nizhu River. This four-lane cable-stayed bridge has the honor of having the highest height above ground of any bridge in the world, and at one point measures 565 meters above the river. Just trust that communist engineering and don't look down.
