The pandemic forced the world to make some quick adjustments in communication. Networking events and office meetings were replaced by video calls; even family gatherings turned virtual. And for each of those calls, we used Zoom.
Pre-pandemic video calls were definitely a thing, and young people have always used Facetime at a fairly consistent rate. But any official call, especially an overseas one, happened on Skype. So what happened? How did the one company dominating the video call sphere completely disappear the second the entire world actually needed it? And how did Zoom swoop in to steal the killing?
The answer lies in dreadful updates to Skype's software that turned those in the know off of it before 2020, but it's actually still in use more than you might think.
