Yesterday, over 52,000 people made it to the finish line to complete the 52nd running of the New York City Marathon; the most finishers the event has ever produced. At the same time those thousands of overachievers were running through the five boroughs, thousands more lined the streets to cheer on their friends and family. But while some fans provided the runners with water and protein bars, others opted for something just as necessary; entertainment.
Running 26.2 miles can be a dull affair, and it has become somewhat of a tradition to line the streets with funny signs; because nothing is more satisfying than telling someone who's running more in a few hours than you will in a calendar year that they still have a long way to go. Shared on the popular whatisnewyork Instagram page, the signs touched on everything from bathroom humor to chaffing. No but really, all that rubbing really adds up.
Tamirat Tola and Hellen Obiri won the marathon with times of 2:04:58 and 2:27:23 respectively, but their levels of commitment are rivaled by a man who claimed on his sign that he trained for months just to hold it up. Here are the 26 best signs for every mile run in the 2023 New York City Marathon.
