Women are still under a lot of pressure to look a certain way. Men can show up to work with bedhead and no one looks twice. But women sometimes have to spend hours on their hair, and if they don’t it’s seen as weird.
But back in the day, women would work on their hair for hours specifically for it to look weird. It started with the “beehive” haircut, which encouraged women to wear their hair as high as it could go, all combed and straight. But in the 1980s, the beehive went out of style and seemed to giveaway to another animal dwelling, the bird nest.
