Informing HR of his situation, he asked them to conduct a complete inspection of his space. The result? Books, laptops, monitors, and even a desk that failed inspection. Upon HR's recommendation, the principal had no choice but to buy her teacher a brand-new state-of-the-art workspace. Now that's why I call malicious compliance karma. Although he didn't get to keep his chair, I'd call the teacher's situation a net win. Maybe the principal will learn to keep meaningless issues to herself next time.
