We may all know that McDonald's is far from the freshest food one can buy, but one Icelandic man decided to put Maccas' staying power to the test.

Though the burger chain may have closed its last location in the Nordic nation back in 2009, local Hjortur Smarason wanted to see just how long their legacy could live on. -

As such, he decided to let his final McDonald's meal sit out to rot ... or not rot, an experiment of sorts he said stemmed from a rumor he heard about the fast food joint. -

"I had heard that McDonald's never decompose so I just wanted to see if it was true or not," he told French news site AFP. -

The answer, it appears, has been a resounding yes. -

Placed under protective glass at the Snotra House, a hostel in Southern Iceland's Þykkvibær village, the combo has seen better days. -

Yet according to hostel owner Siggi Sigurdur, the majority of the age comes from the meal's faded packaging rather than the food itself. -

"The old guy is still there, feeling quite well. It still looks quite good actually," he told BBC News ahead of the meal's aluminum anniversary back in 2019. -

"It's a fun thing, of course, but it makes you think about what you are eating," he continued. -
