No one serious bought a van in the 1970s and left it with a stock coat of paint.
Vans in the 1970s deserved to have interiors fitted with cushy carpets and exteriors decorated like experimental album covers.
A&M Records understood that, and held a "display contest" in 1979 where one lucky fan could "drive home a winner" with a fully decorated Styx van. According to an A&M Records forum the van became a staple of the Danville, California area in the early '80s.
