Bob Beamon destroyed the world record by nearly two feet at the 1968 Mexico Olympics. This jump gave rise to the term "beamonesque" to describe an outstanding feat. He never got close to it again the rest of his life. The record was beaten in 1991 by Mike Powell (non-Olympic event), but still remains the Olympic record over 40 years later.
